2013 Pig Project

This year again we raised our own show pigs, and did very well.  My niece Annabelle did good, she got 3rd with her market gilt, and last with the barrow but the barrow is a crossbred that looks like the kind of pig i showed when i was in 4-H, but she did awesome in the auction!  Tiana got Reserve Champion Breeding Gilt and Show person, and also got Champion Swine Intermediate Interview. Also got 3rd with her Purebred Hampshire barrow, she was going to take him to the Minnesota State Fair but he injured his leg, so she took her breeding gilt.  She got 6th place for 4-H, which was amazing because her class had about 20 gilts in it.  Then we took that same breeding gilt to FFA and also a market gilt that we got from Nick Janak.  The breeding gilt got 4th in her class, then the market gilt didn't place.

 Minnesota State Fair.

 After we bought this heifer at the MN State Shorthorn Sale, from Vogel Shorthorn Farm, we took her to the Minnesota Junior Spring Classic, and ended up getting Reserve Shorthorn Plus female.  Even though it was a very cold MJSC this year it was still fun being up there seeing all the other different heifers and even steers.

 Then this summer we took Tiana to the Shorthorn Junior Nationals in Des Moines, Iowa.  That is one amazing show with all the activities for those kids to do.  We did okay with T's Shorthorn Plus female "Tweety", she did amazing in Showmanship, and learned a lot of new things she can do for showmanship  to fitting and even judging.  Here are some pictures of T showing.  Also at our Dakota County Fair Tiana got Reserve Show person with the heifer.  Now she is out in the pasture enjoying being retired, for now.  Tiana would like to show her as cow calf sometime.

2013 Minnesota State Sale Results

I would like say the 2013 State Sale was as solid as ever.  The quality ran extremely deep with not a single no-sale lot with cattle bringing solid prices with averages close to or above last year.

2012 North Star Classic

Valley City was exceptionally warm and dry.  I think most of Dakota County was in attendance at the show as we had Will Bolllum and Hannah Neil along with us.  The Shorthorn was third in class behind two blue roans and the cross heifer ran into some tough competition.  We home to be buying in the revamped club calf sale next year.

2013 Minnesota State Sale. . .

Hard to believe we are already getting entries ready for the Minnesota State Shorthorn sale to be held on March 3/3/2013 at Jim Simon Arena in Cannon Falls Minnesota!  Here is a preview of our offering. 
All heifers are AI'd on 6/15/2012 for early March 2013 calves and pasture exposed to ADS Mister Conquest 009x until 9/30/2012.  Will post updates as they arise.

Dark roan bred heifer.  Gayle 126y is from a long line of solid females decending from the Stangland herd in Barnsville MN.  She is the first bred offspring from our senior herd bull BSF Fresh Prince (see sires page on blog for pic) and we are really excited about his progeny.  We have a pile of her half sisters in the yearling pen so we decided to let her go.  She was AI'd to Jake's Prince of Jazz.

2012 Minnesota Beef Expo

The beef expo went with a flash!  So many activitied and of course donating a fine heifer to Natalie made it all worth the work.  Here are a few pics to share.

This was T's first year at the State Fair showing beef.  She had fun and ran into a tough class of Shorthorn Plus Steers. Where she also was a finalist for Beef Inerviews we are so proud!!
